The Lucknow Metro began running in 2017 and has become the quickest way to cross the city's main north-south stretch. The line runs from the CCS Airport area at Amausi through to Munshipulia, passing through Charbagh, Hussainganj, Hazratganj, Lucknow University and Indira Nagar along the way.
Extensions and new corridors have been planned and are being built in phases, so the network keeps changing. For the current list of stations, fares, timings and any new sections, the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation's official website and app are the source to trust.
“The metro is great for the long north-south run, but not every landmark is on it.”
What it's good for. Charbagh station sits right next to the main railway station, which makes it a convenient first or last leg for anyone arriving or leaving by train. It's also useful for getting from the railway station to Hazratganj without sitting in traffic, and for reaching the airport side of the city.
What it doesn't cover. As of writing, the old-city lanes of Chowk and the Bara Imambara area aren't directly on the line, and Gomti Nagar is mostly reached by road. For those places, plan on an auto, e-rickshaw or app cab for the last stretch.
How to ride. Tokens and smart cards have been the usual ways to travel, and the metro operator also offers digital options, so check the official channels for what is currently available. Expect a security check and bag scan at entry, as on most metros.
Tips. Avoid the morning and evening rush if you're carrying luggage. Keep a little time for walking at the station, since entrances and platforms can take a few minutes to reach. And if your destination is off the line, check the nearest station and the last-mile option before you leave.
